Former CNN correspondent Chris Nguyen is joining the Scripps News Network as a news anchor.
Nguyen will become one of the few Asian American male news anchors on television and only one of a handful on national television.
Others include Richard Lui on MSNBC and John Yang on the PBS Weekend News Hour.
This past summer at the Asian American Journalists Association convention in Washington, DC, the men of TV news held their first get-together since the pandemic. They met in a show of support for each other and to encourage young Asian American men to pursue careers in journalism.
Chenue Her, of WOI Local5 News in Des Moines, Iowa and the first Hmong American male news anchor in the country; Cefaan Kim of WABC in New York; David Ono, news anchor at KABC in Los Angeles; Lui of MSNBC and Randall Yip of AsAmNews organized the event with the support of Daphne Kwok, Vice President of Diversity Equity & Inclusion, Asian American & Pacific Islander Audience Strategy at AARP.
The men plan to form an official affinity group within AAJA and build on the momentum from the convention.
The Scripps News Network can be seen for free on such platforms as Pluto, Roku TV, Xumo, Haystack and Samsung TV Plus. It is also available on Amazon TV and Amazon Fire.
Until January of this year, it was known as Newsy.
Nguyen previously worked at CNN where he covered the Uvalde shooting, extreme weather events and the indictments of former President Donald Trump.
Prior to that, he worked in the Silicon Valley Bureau for KGO-TV/ABC7 in San Francisco.
“I’m humbled by the opportunity to continue my career with such a bold and forward-thinking news organization,” Nguyen said. “It’s a privilege to serve as a journalist, and I’m committed to earning the trust of our viewers as I embark on this new journey.”
Scripps News President Kate O’Brian announced the hiring today.
“Chris’s experience at the anchor desk and in the field will add another strong player to our team,” Scripps News president O’Brian said in a statement. “We value his excellent track record of high-quality work and look forward to having Chris join us.”
He starts his new assignment on September 29.

Why do east Asians keep moving down when other groups keep moving up exponentially. How did we go from having Connie chung a prime time and news anchor in the 1980s to basically having non on a primetime news channel and yet Indians went from having nothing 30 years ago to in the last 8 years having india origin anchors and hosts on every prime time news channel from CNN to MSNBC etc. How is this right considering the hell east Asians or once referred to as orientals had to endure in America
We don’t see this as a competition. A victory for one Asian group is a victory for all.
I notice that Chris Nguyen is being replaced by Magarino. What happened? Is this permanent?
AsAmNews spoke to Nguyen on November 16 and he told us he has been moving from shift to shift,but remains in the anchor Chair. Scripps News Network is still finalizing its schedule and is determining what his time slot and newscast will be, according to him.
