The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) will now hold the 22nd annual Native Hawaiian Convention on Maui instead of Oahu.
According to KITV, CNHA announced that the convention would be moved from its typical location to elevate the voices on Maui.
“I believe there is no greater way to kāko‘o Maui than to elevate the voices of the Maui people through the largest platform that CNHA can offer. Our convention is the largest gathering of Native Hawaiians that brings community, cross-sector industry leaders, and government officials together to discuss timely issues facing our lāhui,” CNHA CEO Kūhiō Lewis told KITV.
The convention will be held from Nov. 14 – 17 at the Maui Arts and Culture Center in Kahului, KHON 2 reports. It will have been three months since a large fire in Lahaina devastated the island in August.
Every year the convention discusses a variety of topics like economic development, education, housing, health and tourism. This year, KITV reports, there will be a special focus on helping the people of Maui as they recover from the fire.
Over 2,000 people are expected to attend the convention. Registration is open on CNHA’s website
