New doc tells story of missionary killed on remote island

A new documentary The Mission examines the life of John Allen Chau, a young missionary who was killed in 2018 when he traveled to North Sentinel Island, India, seeking to convert an indigenous people who have consistently defended their isolation.

Released by National Geographic Documentary Films, The Mission is currently in limited release.

“Through exclusive interviews and with unprecedented access to Chau’s secret plans, personal diaries, and video archives, ‘The Mission’ examines the mythology of exploration that inspired him, the evangelical community that supported his quest, and reveals his own father’s heartbreak as Chau’s youthful thirst for adventure became a fatal obsession,” the movie’s website states.

Chau’s father Patrick, a Chinese American psychiatrist, told The Guardian in 2019 that he blamed his son’s death on “extreme Christianity.”
