Shahbaz Younus came to stay in a beachside apartment in Karachi, Pakistan, looking to relax with his family, but it turned to tragedy when a surprise wave swept him and his two sons out to sea.
The Pakistani American father drowned on Tuesday at Sea View Beach, one of the most popular beaches for recreation in the South Asian country, with thousands of visitors each year.
According to The Express Tribune, one of Pakistani’s most prominent English-language papers, senior police superintendant Imran Qureshi said that a resident in one of the apartment buildings facing the beach spotted the trio being hit by the wave, promptly alerting the apartment security guard.
The guard rushed into the water, courageously risking his own life, and managed to haul the father and his sons out of the water, reports said. The three victims were rushed to hospitals, but Shahbaz Younus wasn’t able to be saved.
As of Wednesday, Harami Web News reported that Younus’s two sons were still undergoing medical treatment from the drowning.
Pakistani media has praised the heroism of the security guard and pointed out the tragedy underlines the need for beach safety.
