The body of a woman found strangled some 35 years ago has been identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
New DNA technology enabled the GBI to identify the victim as Chong Un Kim of Hinesville, GA, reports WTOC.
Her body was found wrapped in plastic and duct tape in 1988 after being dead an estimated 4-7 days.
Kim was found inside a large suitcase that had been placed in a dumpster. She had immigrated from Korea in 1981 and had lived in Hinesville for several years, Fox5 reported.
The attempt to identify her body went national with both the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children getting involved.
Investigators believe whoever killed her strangled her to death. According to WRDW, GBI began working this year with a company that had advanced DNA-testing capabilities, Othram. Project Justice funded the DNA testing.
Kim’s family has been notified of the identification.
Anyone with any information about her death is urged to call 1-800-597-TIPS (8477) where they can leave information anonymously.
