Rep. Pramila Jayapal criticizes the U.S.’s approach to Israel

In a recent interview with NBC, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) criticized President Joe Biden’s and the U.S. government’s approach to Israel.

Jayapal said on NBC’s Meet the Press show that she has been a big supporter of President Biden. She praised him for being “courageous and strong on the domestic front,” claiming that he has stood up for working-class Americans.

The Congresswoman stated, however, that the President needs to be “just as courageous on this issue.” She noted that the average American has different opinions on Israel than the White House and Congress. She said that while many Americans believe Israel has a right to exist they don’t support the war crimes it has committed.

According to the HuffPost, Rep. Jayapal also called out the United States’ hypocritical approach in its response to the horrific violence in Gaza versus its response to violence in Ukraine.

“Kristen, I just think we have to recognize that this is a double standard,” Jayapal said. “The United States rightly called out Russia for its siege of Ukraine. Rightly called out the attacks on the power infrastructure, the refusal to provide food and water and fuel to the Ukrainians.”

“And we have to recognize that our credibility and our authority on the moral stage is greatly diminished if we do not also call out this siege that Israel is launching on Gaza as violations of international law,” she continued. “We are losing credibility and frankly, we’re being isolated in the rest of the world.”

Rep. Jayapal said that the president and the United States need to recognize its role in the violence.

“At the end of the day, the president and the United States is absolutely responsible, because we also have been the largest military backer of aid to Israel,” Jayapal said, according to the HuffPost. “We need to be able to question where U.S. taxpayer dollars are going and what accountability the United States has in ensuring, for example, that when the president calls for Israel to adhere to the international laws of war, that they actually are doing that. Otherwise, we are complicit in a way that almost no other country in the world is.”

  1. The Gaza border is a hellhouse mirror of human atrocity. Israel has massive power, and is abusing its power against civilians, in response to a horrific attack. This is on top of years of mistreatment and abuse of Palestinians and willfully and strategically foiling the peace process. We have to call for a cease fire and an immediate return to peace talks as the hostages are returned. We can’t allow this inhumanity and barbarism to stand. Also, we can’t vilify anyone with anti-semitism or anti-muslim rhetoric. Our humanity is under siege.

  2. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ right on!! The US is committing war crimes against humanity. Our government is fully responsible thru its support of violence, colonization, ethnic cleansing, the bullying that Israel is in its relentless pursuit of taking all the land away from Palestine for itself. Their 75 years of revenge for the Holocaust is wrong. Plus the Palestinians had nothing to do with the Holocaust. And our government representatives only want to keep the donations flowing from Jews and Israelis and the military profits from sales of arms. Greed greed greed over-riding morals and ethics. Stop!!! Save humanity!
