Asian Improv aRts Midwest (AIRMW) will host the 28th Annual Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival at Elastic Arts on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11.
According to its website, AIRMW was founded by Tatsu Aoki in 1984. AIRMW’s mission is to “build a vital, self-empowered Asian American Community in the Chicago area by advancing the understanding and profile of Asian American cultures through the traditional and contemporary cultural arts.”
The organization presents several musical programs each year, like the Annual Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival.
“We are proud of our history of producing high quality arts programs reflecting the multicultural, multi-ethnic reality of Chicago and the nation. For nearly three decades, this annual festival, and this year’s program in particular, have been a perfect example of that mission in action,” Aoki, now the Executive Director and Creative Director at AIRMW, told the Patch.
On November 10, the concert will showcase individual performances by Takashi Shallow, a multimedia artist from Chicago, and Devon Osamu Tipp, a shakuhachi player, composer, and visual artist based in Pittsburgh.
Lastly, the November 11 concert will feature saxophonist Hitomi Oba, known for her versatile and inventive style, presenting works from her album “Water Stem” released by Asian Improv Records, produced by AIRMW’s Aoki. To find more information about the event, visit aajazz.org.
