Neena Singh is officially the first Sikh and Indian American woman mayor in New Jersey.
Singh was sworn in as mayor of Montgomery, New Jersey, on Tuesday, January 9, The Trentonian reports. The Montgomery Township Committee member was selected to serve as mayor by her peers at the Township Committee’s reorganization meeting.
“Today is a historic moment for our community and our entire state,” Singh said at the meeting last week, according to My Central Jersey. “I am grateful to my fellow committee members for their support. I am also incredibly proud of our township for, once again, breaking barriers and showing our state what inclusive, transparent and forward-thinking governance looks like.”
Sen. Cory Booker and state Sen. Vin Gopal sent a congratulatory video to Singh. State Sen. Andrew Zwicker, Assemblyman Roy Freiman and Congressman Andy Kim (D-NJ) attended the ceremony in person.
Singh says she will focus on public safety and health in 2024.
“Our goal for 2024 is to ensure that our residents have the best possible resources, whether it’s community health, transportation, public spaces, municipal services or recreational activities,” she said, according to My Central New Jersey.
