Move underway to erect statue of Bruce Lee in San Francisco

The Bruce Lee Foundation along with a memorabilia collector are joining forces to rally support for a Bruce Lee statue in San Francisco.

They hope to honor the martial arts legend in the so-called living room of Chinatown, Portsmouth Square.

“When I helped to create a special plaque in 1998 honoring Bruce’s birth at Chinese Hospital, people would comment that SF Chinatown needs something much bigger than a plaque,” Jeff Chinn said to SFGATE. “That’s when I [started] thinking about a statue.”

The plague at the hospital marks the location of Lee’s birth. A statue would be an even more public display of the city’s ties to the actor.

Lee remains an iconic figure 50 years after his death.

The streaming program Warrior rose as one of the top 10 programs on Netflix the week of February 12, according to Looper.

More than 50 years after his death in 1973, his megahit movie Enter the Dragon is the 7th top grossing film worldwide. When adjusted for inflation, the film has earned $2 billion. That puts it ahead of Mission Impossible III, Grease, Toy Story, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Back to the Future.

Enter the Dragon is also the top grossing martial arts film, ahead of number 2, The Matrix Reloaded.
