Poll finds nearly 8 out 10 AAPI adults support abortion rights

A new survey polling Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders finds overwhelming support of abortion, surpassing that of the general population.

UBJ reports that nearly 80% of AAPI adults believe that abortion should be legal. Three-quarters support laws protecting access to abortion across the country.

The survey is good news for Democrats with 55% trusting Democrats on the issue and only 12% trusting Republicans, according to the Hill.

AAPI Data conducted the survey along with the AP-NORC poll of 1172 AAPI adults from Feb 5 – 14. A similar poll by the same polling service of the general population found 64% believing abortion should be legal.

This means support is 15 points higher for abortion rights than Asian Americans.

An analysis by UBJ concluded that the AAPI views on abortion may be shaped by their immigration experience. The right to abortion may not have been available to them from their country of origin and thus they may value that right more than others.

Three out of four also oppose any restrictions by states of those rights and want Congress to impose restrictions on the states to restrict or even allow abortion on their own.

Even AAPI Republicans support abortion rights, according to the survey. The Hill reports 57% of AAPI Republicans say abortion should be legal.
