Dartmouth suspends fraternity after suspected hazing death

Dartmouth College confirmed it suspended a fraternity following the possible alcohol and hazing death of biomedical engineering student Won Jang, Mass Live reports.

Divers found him at the bottom of the Connecticut River just four hours after he had been reported missing Sunday.

Jang had been at a party put on by his fraternity Beta Alpha Omega and the sorority Alpha Phi.

Dartmouth also suspended Alpha Phi, according to ABC News. Both had a history of getting into trouble with the university. The Dartmouth reported in January that Beta Alpha Omega and Alpha Phi were suspended for violating community standards.

A college spokesperson declined to discuss with CNN what role both may have played in Jang’s death.

“We aren’t able to provide details on an ongoing investigation, but we can say that at the time of the incident, Beta Alpha Omega was on alcohol probation following a fall-, winter- and spring-term suspension. Alpha Phi was placed on alcohol probation during the fall 2023 term and then returned to good standing,” Morgan Kelly said to CNN.

Jang is being remembered at Dartmouth as a vibrant and active member of the community who embraced the school commuunity.

“Won wholeheartedly embraced opportunities at Dartmouth to pursue his academic and personal passions. He served as a project manager at the DALI Lab, was a research assistant at Thayer, and participated in the TuckLAB entrepreneurship program. He supported his peers and found fast friendships as an international student mentor for the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and as a fraternity brother at Beta Alpha Omega,” Dean of College Scott Brown wrote on a memorial page. “He enthusiastically took part in the Dartmouth community, including starting his own band.”
