Asian American leaders react to shooting at Trump rally

Asian American politicians across the country are condemning the shooting at Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania.

Shots were fired at former President Trump on Saturday while he was speaking at a campaign rally near Butler. One bullet grazed Trump’s ear, and another killed one attendee. The incident is being labeled as an assassination attempt. President Joe Biden paused his campaign efforts to condemn the shooting.

Vice President Kamala Harris was one of the several AANHPI leaders who issued a statement of condemnation. She released two statements on X, formerly known as Twitter. In one statement, she called for unity.

”Assassination attempts have no place in our nation, or anywhere. Doug and I pray for the family of the victim who was senselessly killed yesterday and hope for a speedy recovery for those injured,” she wrote.

Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA), the chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, also issued a statement on X.

Political violence and gun violence never have a place in America—never. My thoughts are with the innocent victims’ families, and I’m wishing a swift recovery to Donald Trump and everyone impacted in Pennsylvania,” the Congresswoman wrote.

Vivek Ramaswamy, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump this year, called the near miss “nothing short of an act of God.” In a tweet he claimed that Biden was responsible for the “toxic national climate that led to this tragedy.”
