Filipino American actor Conrad Ricamora will star in Hulu’s upcoming series How To Die Alone, playing the main character Melissa’s best friend Rory, reports Deadline.
The show will follow Mel (played by Natasha Rothwell), described by Hulu’s press release as a “broke, fat, Black JFK airport employee who’s never been in love and forgotten how to dream, until an accidental brush with death catapults her on a journey to finally take flight and start living by any means necessary.” Rothwell is also a showrunner and executive producer for the series.
“Self-involved, boy-crazy, love-starved Rory is Mel’s well-meaning best friend,” states Deadline’s exclusive. “Rory loves to have a good time at all costs and is blind to his privileges — having been adopted by an über wealthy Upper East Side family. His father, the CEO of JFK, is embarrassed by Rory and his winding path in life. When his JFK crush, a bicoastal bae named Ben, shows interest in him, Rory finds himself experimenting with monogamy for the first time … and holding on for dear life.”
Ricamora starred in the 2023 Broadway musical Here Lies Love as part of an all-Filipino cast and in the 2015 Broadway revival of The King and I. He’s known for his role as gay computer hacker Oliver Hampton in the ABC television series How to get Away with Murder. He is currently starring in another Broadway musical Oh, Mary!, which is currently running now until November 10, 2024.
Ricamora also received the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award in 2016, AsAmNews reported. He continues to be outspoken on his identity as a gay man of color in interviews and on social media.
How To Die Alone is set to premiere September 13. View the official trailer:
