Jessica Caloza sworn in as California’s first Filipina legislator

Jessica Caloza has officially made history as the first Filipina elected to California’s State Legislature. Sworn into office on Monday, her induction marks a significant milestone for Filipino American representation in state politics. The ceremony, held in Sacramento, was attended by supporters and community leaders who celebrated this groundbreaking achievement.

According to Asian Journal, Caloza expressed her pride in breaking barriers, stating, “As the first Filipina elected to the State Legislature, I’m honored to break this glass ceiling because women—especially women of color—belong in all spaces where decisions are being made, including at the Capitol.”

As described by The Eastsider, Caloza emphasized her commitment to tackling critical issues such as affordable housing, education equity, and expanding healthcare access. Representing California’s 52nd District, which encompasses diverse communities in Los Angeles, her election highlights the increasing political influence of Filipino Americans across the state.
