Sang Kee Peking Duck House, a popular restaurant in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, is closed indefinitely. According to FOX 29 Philadelphia, the city shut the restaurant down Friday after steam and water damage led to electrical problems.
In a video posted to Facebook, the restaurant showed steam coming from a pipe just outside the restaurant. CBS News reports that another video showed water dripping from the ceiling and steam pouring into the restaurant.
Henry Chow, whose parents opened the restaurant in 1980, told FOX 29 the restaurant has been trying to get the issue fixed for months. He asked the Water Department, Vicinity Energy (the company that operates the pipes) and other agencies for help, but no one has answers.
“I’m scared to death, this is my family’s whole livelihood. This is what we do, this is what we’ve done forever,” Chow told CBS News.
Customers who have been coming to the restaurant for years expressed their disappointment.
“I’m devastated. I really love this place. This is the only place I come to in Center City to get Chinese food—the best food, the best service,” one customer told FOX 29.
