‘Wicked’ becomes highest grossing musical adaptation

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked continues to break box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing film based on a Broadway musical.

Wicked, which was released on Nov. 22, has grossed over $648.5 million worldwide as of Jan. 2, per Billboard. The previous record-holder, 2008’s Mamma Mia!, had a worldwide gross of $611.5 million. Considering that Oscar nominations are due on Jan. 17, with the 97th Academy Awards being showcased on March 2nd, Wicked will likely add to its current tally.

As mentioned by NBC, Wicked is 2024’s sixth-largest worldwide release and the third-largest domestic release of 2024, behind Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. The film’s upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good, previously titled Wicked Part Two, is slated for a Nov. 21, 2025 release.
