Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has designated January as Muslim American Heritage Month in the Great Lakes State to kick off the new year.
“During Muslim American Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the profound impact Muslim Americans have had on Michigan’s culture, economy, and communities,” Whitmer said, according to WZZM 13. “Let’s honor their achievements, reflect on their history, and recommit to building a Michigan where everyone can thrive.”
Whitmer referenced prominent figures in her proclamation, such as Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, fashion designer Naeem Khan and model Bella Hadid, as examples of Muslim excellence within the arts, entertainment, entrepreneurship and executive leadership.
The Great Lakes State joins Illinois, New Jersey and Washington as the few states that now observe the designated month for Muslim Americans.
Muslim American Heritage Month could also be federally recognized after two bills enshrining the holiday were introduced last January.
Sen. Cory Booker introduced the bill in the Senate, which has since been referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. The House bill has been referred to the Committee on Oversight and Accountability after it was introduced by Rep. André Carson.
