U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted an operation in San Jose on Sunday, according to a statement from Mayor Matt Mahan’s office, as reported by KRON4. The San Jose Police Department (SJPD) was notified but did not participate or assist with the operation.
Mayor Mahan expressed his concerns over potential impacts on the city’s immigrant community. “I sincerely hope that ICE remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city, not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community,” Mahan stated.
While details of the operation remain unclear, the mayor’s statement highlighted the need for clarity and accountability, especially in the context of increased fears within immigrant communities under President Donald Trump’s administration.
According to News Nation, this follows heightened anxiety among undocumented residents due to intensified deportation initiatives. Recent claims of ICE agents requesting identification from students in nearby San Francisco further fueled concerns, though ICE later denied the reports, stating they were false.
The operation’s purpose and its potential implications for San Jose’s immigrant residents remain under scrutiny. Mayor Mahan’s call to focus on serious criminal activity echoes broader concerns about fair enforcement practices and community trust.
The Hill reports that nationwide ICE agents arrested 956 people Sunday. The number of arrests over the past three days averaged 433 per day. That’s 123 more per day than all of fiscal year 2024.
According to CNN, each field office has been given a quota of 75 arrests per day.
