New research by Stop AAPI Hate shows a surge in online hate against Asian Americans since President Trump won the 2024 election, the advocacy group said Thursday.
“Our research suggests this is no coincidence,” Stop AAPI Hate said.
January 2025 saw the highest number of anti-Asian slurs by month since Stop AAPI Hate’s monitoring began in August 2022, with a majority directed toward South Asian communities, the group said.
“Trump has spent years spewing anti-immigrant rhetoric, on the campaign trail and from the White House — with no regard for the devastating impact it has had on our communities,” Stop AAPI Hate said. “Our report, A New Extreme, suggests that after his re-election, Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and policies are fueling a surge in anti-Asian hate — both online and offline.”

Online threats of violence reached their highest point in December 2024 since monitoring began and remained high in January 2025, the group said.
Further, stories Stop AAPI Hate received through its reporting center found bad actors have become emboldened in their threats since the election, it said.
