Momentum builds to restrict purchases of property by foreigners

New data gathered by the Committee of 100 shows 22 states, including 17 last year alone, passed bills restricting the purchase of property by foreign entities.

28 states are currently considering a total of 82 bills that would place similar restrictions on property purchases.

One bill is also being considered in Congress.

Many civil rights groups consider such laws discriminatory and xenophobic. They blame anti-immigrant rhetoric spewed by local, state and national politicians. They say such actions can lead to an increase in anti-Asian hate.

China has been a prime target of many of these bills, but Korea, Burma, and Pakistan have been targeted as well.

Cuba, Iran, Russia and Venezuela have also been mentioned.

The restrictions include the purchase of agricultural land, residential property and property near military installations.
