A group of immigrant-owned small businesses that make up the Graham Center in Falls Church, VA, are being forced to close by March 31.
Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) plans to demolish Graham Center, which was established in 1953, and replace it with a medical facility. VHC notified the businesses in mid-August 2024, giving the business owners seven months to relocate, which some say is not enough.
The businesses include: Pho Golden Cow, Pupuseria Mana, Biên Hòa Supermarket, Skyline Nail Supply, Carina’s Fashion, Dr. Hung M. Nguyen, DDS, and Modern Shoe Repair and Cleaners.
“We should be given some funds to help us relocate. I would like at least another month or two added to the deadline and some rent relief,” expressed Elvis Ordoñez, owner of Elviz Styles Salon.
According to local grassroots organization A Viet Place Collective, “the small businesses have provided integral community services, products, and food to the multicultural communities of Falls Church and the greater area for decades.”
In December, a Viet Place launched a digital campaign asking people to email VHC to demand an extension on the deadline to vacate, rent relief in the final months, and relocation funds, to little avail.
This Saturday, March 15, A Viet Place will be hosting a “One Last Hurrah!” event to celebrate the small businesses of Graham Center, where attendees can shop at the businesses and write messages of gratitude.
