American Samoan family accused of voter fraud in Alaska

An Alaskan community is rallying around an American Samoan family accused of voter fraud.

According to Alaska News Source, 10 men from an American Samoan family living in Whittier, Alaska, have been charged with voter misconduct and perjury. State prosecutors claim they were illegally voting in local elections.

The family members charged were born in American Samoa, the Alaska Beacon reports. The country is the only U.S. territory whose residents have not been granted birthright citizenship by Congress.

Anchorage Daily News reports that several local residents gathered outside the courthouse this week to support some of the family members as they made their first court appearance.

Last Wednesday, the Whittier City Council passed a resolution asking the state of Alaska to amend its constitution to allow residents from U.S. territories to vote in local elections.
