Arrest made in brutal attack in Oakland Chinatown

Police Monday announced an arrest in the shocking attack on a 91-year old Asian man shoved to the concrete in Oakland Chinatown.

ABC7 News reported Yahya Muslim also faces charges in the attacks on 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman that same day.

Muslim had already been in custody on other charges when prosecutors filed the additional charges Monday.

“We recognize some in our community come to Chinatown to target people. We know they target our elderly,” said Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong. “They come because they believe our community won’t report it to police. We are excited we have already transitioned into new strategies to make Chinatown a safer community.”

Asian actor Daniel Wu, an Oakland native, joined the news conference in announcing the arrest. Earlier, along with Daniel Dae Kim, he had put up a reward of $25,000 and has since raised it to $30,000.

“My dad is 91 years old,” Wu said at a news conference, according to KTVU. “To have to think about something like that happening to my father is just unimaginable.”

The incident involving the 91-year-old man shocked the Bay Area and came just days after a similar incident that left a Thai American man dead, Vicha Ratanapakdee. No arrest has been made in that case.

#JusticeforVicha has become a rallying cry to symbolize violence against Asian Americans since the attack.
