A popular New York City Kosher deli has named a new dish “Arvind mini knaidel,” in honor of 2013 National Spelling Bee winner Arvind Mahankali. reports IBN Live.
Arvind won by correctly spelling the word knaidel, a dumpling put in Jewish soups.
The honor for the Queen’s resident was announced today at an event sponsored by Rep Grace Meng.
A large number of members of both the Jewish American and Indian American communities came out for the event.
Ironically, a small controversy erupted after the championship when some in the Jewish community alleged that Mahankali had actually misspelled the word knaidel which they said should have been spelled kneydl.
But Bee organizers stood by their decision saying the spelling Arvind used was the same one in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary.
