First year Rep Marilyn Strickland issued a statement Sunday to mark Hanbok Culture Week, a celebration of traditional Korean clothing.
Strickland wore a hanbok during her swearing in ceremony on the House Floor on January 3.
“On that momentous occasion, I decided to wear a hanbok, which symbolizes my heritage and my culture-which paid respect to my mother,” she said in a videotaped statement released on social media.
The gesture was enthusiastically received by her constituents, both Asian Americans and non-Asians.
“Representation does matter. Our voices matter,” she continued. “My statement on the floor of the House of Representatives wearing hanbok was a way to share my culture and heritage with the entire world.”
