Coming off a successful debut at Cannes, Justin Chon’s latest film, Blue Bayou, will close the Asian American International Film festival on August 22 in New York City.
The hybrid festival will be available for both in-person viewing and streaming. AsAmNews is the proud presenting media sponsor of this year’s event.
Chon stars in his own directed film as a Korean adoptee who faces deportation from the only country he has ever called home. Alongside Chon will be Academy Award winning actress Alicia Vikander who plays his wife Kathy.
The addition of Blue Bayou comes after the festival previously announced it will open with Jackson Evan Leong’s Snakehead on August 11.
The intense thriller stars Shuya Chang trying to navigate life in New York Chinatown after getting caught up in a crime ring of human smugglers. The plot is based on a true story.
This year’s special presentation event at the Asian American International Film Festival will take place August 18 with a double feature- Lumpia with a Vengeance and The Fabulous Filipino Brothers.
The cast and crew of both films will be attending the event for what’s been dubbed Filipinos in Focus.
Directed by Patricia Ginelsa, Lumpia with a Vengeance is described as an action comedy as the Lumpia armed-avenger works with a high school student to stop a crime syndicate from selling drugs masked as food.
Opening the double billing is Dante Basco’s The Fabulous Filipino Brothers. The story centers around Basco’s real life brothers confronting family, love and Filipino culture.
Presented by Asian Cinevision, this year’s festival features 25 International Films, 13 World Premieres, 14 East Coast Premieres, and 18 New York City Premieres.
