An Indian-origin cardiologist was killed in a California plane crash on Monday, Tribune India reports.
A twin-engine Cessna C340 crashed in Santee, California near Santana High School on Monday around 12:15 p.m., NBC 7 reports. The plane was heading toward San Diego from Yuma, Arizona.
Authorities confirmed that Dr. Suguta Das is one of the crash victims. Dr. Das owns the plane, but it is unclear whether or not he was piloting the plane when it crashed, KYMA reports.
Dr. Das worked at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Arizona, according to KYMA. The medical center released a statement about Dr. Das’ death.
“We are deeply sad to hear news of a plane owned by local cardiologist Dr. Sugata Das, which crashed near Santee,” Dr. Bharat Magu, Chief Medical Officer, YRMC, said in the statement. “As an outstanding cardiologist and dedicated family man, Dr. Das leaves a lasting legacy. We extend our prayers and support to his family, colleagues, and friends during this difficult time.”
Dr. Das grew up in Pune, India to a Bengali family, according to Tribune India. He was the director of Power of Love Foundation, an American non-profit that helps women and children overseas that are infected or affected by AIDS and HIV.
Dr. Das also had two sons.
