A Philadelphia teenager who put herself in jeopardy while protecting a group of younger boys from bullies is being honored.
Al Dia reports that State Rep. Jared Solomon presented Christina Lu Friday with a citation commemorating her bravery.
She stepped in to stop a group of four bullies from harassing Asian American teens aboard a SEPTA train.
The bullies then turned their attention on Lu, and beat her-leaving her with severe injuries.
Lu says she’s received support from around the globe for her courage.
“There are also kids coming out from like San Francisco, mail from all over the world sending to my school saying that they are proud, like they see me as a role model,” she said.
Lu plans to continue her advocacy to stop anti-Asian hate and bullying. A Go Fund Me campaign launched by her family raised just over $750,000.
“What I see in our young people, and particularly Christina, is someone who rises to the challenge of the next moment in our city’s history. We need more Christina’s throughout our city and throughout our country, and I really hope the young people take her leadership to heart,” Rep. Solomon said, according to Al Dia.
Lu has launched a Philadelphia chapter of Alliance of Youth Leaders in the United States to teach kids the leadership skills to stand up for what they believe.
“I wanted to stand up because my mom taught me to always make sure that you’re helping others. And at that moment, I saw a group of kids that were scared, frightened, and in need of help,” Lu said.

I don’t understand why Christina Lu received only a citation for her wonderful act of bravery. Why wasn’t she given supplemental income for college, housing and food? Better yet why wasn’t given a full scholarship for her selfless act of heroism. It is so well deserved!
