Dozens gathered in the frigid New York cold Saturday to pray for a woman murdered after police say a man followed her home and stabbed her 40 times in her Chinatown apartment.
ABC7 reports the death of Christina Yuna Lee two weeks ago has reignited calls for both community healing and safety.
The event at Sara D. Roosevelt Park basketball court in Chinatown took place just blocks from her home.
“We’re here to pay our respects and further the wishes of Lee’s family to do as much as we can to keep people safe,” Peter Kerre, founder of Safewalks, said to PIX11 News.
Kerre helped launch Safewalks last year and in a short time built up an army of 2,000 volunteers to walk home people who feel unsafe.
“We need people to step up to do Safewalks in many neighborhoods to make sure people feel okay,” Stanley Zheng said.
