FBI warns thieves targeting AsAm business owners in New Jersey

CATEGORIES

The FBI has warned Asian American business owners in New Jersey that burglars may be targeting their homes.

According to CBS News, two to three incidents are reported weekly. The FBI Newark Field Office believes the thieves are stalking business owners to determine their work schedules. They burglarize the homes when the business owners are at work.

The FBI says Asian American business owners are targets because they tend to keep cash and pricey items at home, News 12 New Jersey reports.

FBI special agent Michael Ratta told reporters that the thieves are very thorough.

“They’re doing counter-surveillance. They’re doing surveillance of the business owners, not only at their home, but also at the business,” Ratta said, according to CBS News. “They’ll have lookouts in the business during the commission of the burglary in the event that the homeowner may go home from work.”

The Asian American community is worried about the recent string of burglaries.

“It’s just scary to know someone is profiling you and knowing where you live, and what business you’re running and how your business is doing and that’s why they are targeting you,” Grace Kim, owner of New Splendid Nail and Spa in Fort Lee, told News 12 New Jersey.
