A 22-year-old Afghan refugee was randomly stabbed in Vancouver’s Chinatown.

According to Global News CA, the victim delivered meals for Skip the Dishes. He was locking his bike to a lamppost as he prepared to deliver a meal. Suddenly, someone he didn’t know approached him from behind and stabbed him repeatedly.

According to CTV News, the young man suffered life-threatening injuries to his throat and chest but is expected to survive.

Nursing student Karla McCallum and other witnesses intervened. McCallum explained to CTV News how community members came together to help the victim. Witnesses took turns applying pressure to the man’s wounds. A woman from a nearby hair salon provided towels to pack the wound.

The wounded delivery worker staid on the phone with his customer while injured. McCallum applauded his selflessness.

“You’re fighting for your life and you’re still trying to deliver a meal,” she told CTV News.

Skip the Dishes told CTV News that it takes the safety of its workers seriously.

“Skip is committed to maintaining a safe ecosystem for all stakeholders including couriers, customers and restaurant partners,” the company’s statement said.
