Southeast Asian market in Seattle closes after 40 years

A Southeast Asian grocery store in Seattle is closing its doors after nearly 40 years of business.

According to KUOW, Viet-Wah, located in Seattle’s Little Saigon, officially closed on Friday, September 30 at 7 p.m.

The store was founded by Duc Tran, who came to Seattle in 1976 as a refugee after the Vietnam War, KNKX reports. He opened the store to provide the community with Southeast Asian ingredients they could not find at other grocery stores in Seattle.

The business was so successful that a second location opened in Renton, Washington. That location will remain open.

Duc’s daughter Leeching Tran, who is the Vice President of Viet-Wah Supermarket, told KUOW that she’ll miss seeing regulars.

“You know, it’s familiar faces, people you know, and recognize and you look forward to seeing every time you come here, so that’s gonna be hard I think,” she said.
