The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Land Use Committee will be hosting a public forum for community comment on a proposed Pacific Islander Cultural District this Monday, Nov. 7.
“The cultural district is historical for all Pacific Islanders,” San Francisco resident and San Francisco Equity Group advisor Gaynor Siataga told AsAmNews. “Our ancestors fought blood sweat and tears for this moment. We stand as their legacies.”
The proposed cultural district will center on the Visitacion Valley neighborhood which is home to a majority of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander residents. If the Board of Supervisors votes to approve its creation, the cultural district will be the first of its kind in the United States that specifically recognizes the Pacific Islander Community. The vote is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
“I’m excited about the idea for the Pacific Islander Cultural District.” Anna Mahina, an organizer for San Francisco Tongans Rise Up, told AsAmNews. “Our people have contributed in so many ways to the city that it’s time we have a place to show our existence.”
The forum will be held in Room 250 of City Hall’s Legislative Chamber at 1:30am. Those wishing to attend remotely can watch the forum either on SF Cable Channels 26,28,78 or 99. For those interested who live outside San Francisco city limits can watch the forum at sfgovtv.org.
