Pop star sentenced to prison in China for rape

CATEGORIES

A court in Beijing has sentenced Kris Wu to 13 years in prison for rape, CNN reports. The Chinese-Canadian pop star was a former member of the Korean-Chinese pop group EXO.

Variety reports that according to statements from the court sentencing, Wu forced three women to have sex with him in 2020 while they were under the influence of alcohol. In July 2018, he also arranged for two women at his home to engage in “promiscuous activities” while intoxicated.

According to CNN, Wu was arrested on suspicion of rape in August 2021 after sexual assault allegations against him surfaced online. In June 2022, Variety reports that the court convicted Wu on two charges: organizing a crowd to engage in promiscuous activities and rape.

Wu will serve a combined 13-year prison sentence for both charges. After he is released, CNN reports that he will be immediately deported.

So far, Wu’s representatives have not provided a statement or comment on his sentencing.
