It was a banner night for Everything Everywhere All at Once with the sci-fi comedy-drama winning four major awards at the Screen Actor Guild Awards Sunday night.
It won best ensemble in a motion picture. Actress Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian to win in the category of best actress. Jamie Lee Curtis and Key Huy Quan won for best supporting actress and actor. Quan is the first Asian male to win a best supporting actor award.
The cast paid tribute to James Hong, the 94-year-old Gong Gong who played the father of Yeoh’s character Evelyn Wang.
“He’s been acting since there were only 49 states and he just turned 94,” said Yeoh to a cheering crowd that rose to its feet. ” The extended applause inspired Hong to show off a few dance moves on stage to laughter as Yeoh joined him.
“I got my SAG card 70 years ago. My first movie was with Clark Gable. Back in those days, the Good Earth, the leading rol was played by these guys with eyes taped up like this,” as he extended his eyelids upwards. And the producer said the Asians were not good enought and they are not box office. But look at us now!”
