Priyanka Chopra, Mindy Kaling, Malala Yousafzai and other South Asian celebrities co-hosted South Asian Excellence Pre-Oscars Celebration on Thursday at the Paramount Studio lot.
According to Variety, the event honored the documentary “All That Breathes”; the song and score from “Everything Everywhere All at Once”; the song “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR“; documentary shorts “Elephant Whisperers” and “Stranger at the Gate”; and shortlisted international feature “Joyland.”
Chopra opened the event by acknowledging the South Asian creatives who “fought the stereotypes to ensure that our stories were not just a cliche, those of us who fought for actors to have bigger leading roles. Those of you who fought for stories of South Asian descent to be a norm, to not be an exception, but to be normal,” Variety reports.
Kaling said it was an honor to co-host the event.
“Last night I was honored to co-host a celebration of South Asian Oscar nominees. Met so many new friends and hugged old ones, and was inspired by the talent all around me,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
