Ke Huy Quan wins Best Supporting Actor

By Akemi Tamanaha, AsAmNews Associate Editor

Ke Huy Quan has won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once. He previously won a Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actor’s Guild for his role in the film.

“Mom, I just won an Oscar,” he said as he accepted the award.

Quan reflected on his journey to winning an Oscar, mentioning that he came to the United States on a boat as a refugee from Vietnam.

“They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This… this is the American dream,” he said.

Quan’s win was celebrated joyously by many in the audience, including Steven Spielberg who gave Quan his first major role as Short Round in Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom. Quan has spoken openly about how through the years he believed that his role in Indiana Jones in 1984 may have been his only shot until the Daniels cast him in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

“Dreams are something you have to believe in,” he said. “I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.”
