The US Senate confirmed Richard Verma 67-26 to a top position in the U.S. State Department, reports India Today.
He will serve as Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources and will oversee foreign assistance and other programs, according to the American Bazaar.
Verma graduated with a JD cum laude from American University and with a PhD from Georgetown University.
Verma has worked as a former US ambassador to India for two years, from January 2015 to January 2017 during the Obama administration. He is also the first Indian American to hold that job. His work was credited with the historic deepening and expansion of U.S.-India bilateral ties.
He started his career as a judge advocate in the US Air Force in 1994 and received decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.
He later worked as the senior national security advisor to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for five years. During the Obama administration, he joined the State Department as Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs.
