New American Media is reporting that Chinese immigrants are well under represented among those applying for deferred action.
Among the 15,000 eligible for a two year reprieve from deportation, the Migration Policy Institute estimates less than 1,400 have applied.
“Even though Chinese are eligible, they’re not applying at a high rate to appear in the statistics the Department of Homeland Security put out,” said Jeanne Batalova, MPI’s senior policy analyst and demographer. “Some did apply, but they didn’t make it to the top.”
Chinese participation is below 10 percent. Just 16 percent of eligible Filipinos have applied.
