Inquirer: Depression Plagues Asian American College Students

CATEGORIES

CornellA study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found Asian American college students experience a higher rate of depression than Caucasians, reports the Inquirer.

The research from the University of California, San Diego quoted college counselors who say Asian Americans are reluctant to seek help.

Model minority pressures, family expectations and racism and discrimination are some of the reasons cited by those who work in the field.

“You internalize it more than it’s forced on you,” said Tommy Li, a junior at Cornell.  “My own experience is that by the time I got into high school and now in college, I put that pressure on myself a lot more than my parents pressure me to do that. You believe that you should not get Bs.”

You can read an in-depth look at the problem in the Inquirer.
