Asian American teenager Casey Phair has become the youngest player to see the field at a women’s World Cup.
The 16-year-old grew up in New Jersey to a mother from South Korea and a father who was also born in the U.S. She ultimately made the decision to represent South Korea at international competitions. She played forward at the youth level for South Korea before being called up to the senior team.
On Monday, Phair made her World Cup debut for South Korea during the team’s game against Colombia. She entered the game in the 78th minute, as South Korea was losing 2-0. Broadcasters with Fox Sports announced that Phair was the youngest player to play in a women’s World Cup at 16 years and 26 days old.
The game ultimately ended in a 2-0 loss for South Korea. Phair posted about her debut on Instagram after the game.
“Although today we didn’t get the result we hoped for, we will work hard to bounce back next game. I am honored to make both my senior team and World Cup debut, and wanted to thank everyone that has supported me to this point – this is just the beginning,” Phair wrote in her caption.
