Japan upset Finland in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, eliminating the Finnish from knock-out stage contention.
The team beat Finland 98-88 on Sunday.
Japan is hosting the 2023 FIBA World Cup alongside the Philippines and Indonesia. According to Sports Illustrated, the team has struggled. They are currently ranked 36th in the world and have not medaled in the FIBA Asia Cup since 1997.
This year’s Japanese team features Yuta Watanabe, a shooting guard who plays for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA. Watanabe struggled against Finland with just 4 points on 1-6 shooting in 29 minutes, Arizona Sports reports.
Joshua Hawkinson, who plays for the Shinshu Brave Warriors, led Japan’s offense with 28 points. Yuki Kawamura scored 25.
