In the wake of the Lahaina fire, the University of Hawai’i is offering scholarships to local high school students.
It has been less than two months since the fire in Maui. It killed 97 people, destroying countless homes, landmarks and cultural sites.
Lahainalana High School was devastated by the fire. Its students have been attending classes at a temporary site, CBS News reports.
Last week on September 18, the University of Hawai’i (UH) President David Lassner spoke to the Lahainalana High School (LHS) Class of 2024. He delivered news that UH would offer all LHS seniors full scholarships that would cover room and board, tuition, and supplies to any of UH’s ten campuses.
While this initial funding is for one academic year, UH is seeking other funding sources to cover LHS students’ expenses for their entire time at college.
According to the University of Hawai’i News, the students were notified at their class assembly at the school’s temporary location: Kūlanihākoʻi High School in Kihei. LHS was forced to relocate because of the deadly wildfires.
Lassner stated that the LHS Class of 2024 have faced “‘unimaginable losses,’” from COVID-19 their freshman year to the dangerous wildfires their senior year. Because of this, Lassner hopes that the scholarship will be a help to them and their families that are experiencing hardship during this time.
