’The Other Ones’ continue their fight for visibility

by Martin and Rich Lee

Asian Americans continue to be seen as more Asian than American despite our nativity, citizenship status, and long history in and contributions to this country. In fact, research shows that Americans are more likely to view European celebrities and athletes as American than Asian American celebrities and athletes. So it’s sadly no surprise when schools conflate famous Asians with Asian Americans even during AAPI Heritage Month. Representation matters and the fight for visibility continues.

Martin and Rich Lee are second-generation Korean American brothers. Martin is a retired elementary school teacher and the illustrator of the strip. Rich is a professor of psychology in Asian American studies at the University of Minnesota and writes the content.
