Asher Hong impresses on rings, vault during qualifications at Olympics

Asher Hong, an Olympic gymnast for Team USA, impressed on the rings and the vault during the qualifying round of the men’s gymnastics competition Saturday.

The U.S. men’s gymnastics team finished second overall in the standings. According to NBC Dallas Fort Worth, Hong finished third on rings, fifth on vault and sixth on floor exercise.

Hong’s parents were in the crowd watching their son. ESPN reporter Jenna Laine tweeted that the NBC Olympics broadcast put a heart rate monitor across the screen for his mother Karen. Her heart rate, according to the monitor, spiked to 144 bpm.

“I’ve been looking forward to this competition. It’s kind of what I’ve been training for this whole year and my whole life. So, to finally go out there and show off the routines is like, feels awesome,” Hong said. “I feel good [about my performance today]. I feel like I did my job to the best of my extent. I mean, I hit the events that I needed to. High bar was a little mess up, but I recovered well,” Hong said per NBC Dallas Fort Worth.
