The International Olympic Committee has issued an apology after South Korean Olympians were wrongly identified as North Korean during the opening ceremony.
According to ESPN, the French and English announcers introduced the South Korean team as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” which is the official name of North Korea. South Korea, is referred to as the Republic of Korea. BBC reports that the captions on the broadcast were correct.
The IOC released the apology through their Korean language account on X, The Athletic reports.
“We would like to offer a deep apology over the mistake that occurred in the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony,” the organization said.
The South Korean delegation has asked for assurances that the mistake will not be repeated.
