Hoping to repair its damaged relations with the Korean American community, KTVU in Oakland, California this past weekend aired a special highlighting the success of three prominent Korean Americans.
According to KoreAm, the special was a direct result of a meeting between the station and the Korean American community after KTVU reported four completely fictitious names as those of Asiana Flight 214.
“We undertook an intensive effort to reach out to the Korean community after our mistake,” Tom Raponi, KTVU’s vice president and general manager said. “In those outreach efforts, it became clear that one of the most upsetting aspects of our mistake is that it accidentally repeated an ethnic stereotype that has been upsetting to the Korean people.”
The special was an idea of Taewoong Koo, president of the Korean American Bar Association of Northern California.
