If Arsalan Iftikhar didn’t know the power of social media, he knows now.
The founder of the Muslim Guy and an international human rights lawyer tweeted his outrage at the defacement of a Gap ad featuring a Sikh American model.
That set off a public uproar that lead Gap to quickly change the profile picture on its Twitter page to feature the ad.
He recently talked to Times of India on the unexpected impact of his tweet.
“I wanted my 40,000 Facebook/Twitter followers to see that racism was still alive and well in America,” Iftikhar said. “Of course, I had absolutely no idea that my small social media campaign would turn out to become international news, but I hope that this makes people see that social media and the Internet can be used for good things.”
He said in his ten years of blogging, he’s never personally experienced such a positive viral response.
“My message to everyone out there is to speak out against racism on social media whenever we see it because we never know when that one story might help empower millions around the world.”
You can read about Iftikhar’s personal experience with racism and his thoughts on a post racial American in the Times of India.
RE: The man who set off the uproar over the defacement of the Gap ad: Yeah….this post is the big example that shows that how powerful the social media is now a days. Racism is a big social matter and mostly people wants to talk about it.
