A new report from Pew Research Center found that large majorities of Americans believe that many minority groups in the U.S., like Asian Americans, face at least some discrimination. But, among some groups of Americans, that belief is declining.
The report, released on May 20, found specifically that about two-thirds of Americans surveyed (66%) said Asian people face a lot of or some discrimination. Seventy-four percent said Black people and 72% said Hispanic people face at least some discrimination.
Pew Research Center also examined perceptions about discrimination against other marginalized groups. About eight-in-ten (82%) of respondents said undocumented immigrants face a lot or some discrimination.
But the report also found that some Americans that, amongst some Americans, “perceptions of discrimination against racial and ethnic groups – Black people, Hispanic people, Asian people and White people – have declined over the past year.”
The data, according to Pew, suggests that Republicans are driving the decline.
“Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say that 15 of 20 groups included in the survey face a lot of or some discrimination,” the report states.
