Indian Americans are urging filmmakers to remove the slurs directed at Indian Americans in the new Justin Bateman movie, Bad Words, reports Hollywood.com.
The use of the slurs came to light in a trailer now on You Tube which has been viewed by Indian American leaders.
“Addressing an Indo-American kid as ‘Hey Slumdog’ and using the words ‘curry hole’ for him smells of xenophobia and racism,” said Rajan Zed, chair of the Indo-American Leadership Confederation. Indo-Americans are for free speech as much anybody else, if not more, but unnecessarily belittling a community with stereotyped remarks, even in a comedy, hurts the community. ”
Zed also called for a formal apology from Bateman who also directs the film.
I too have seen the trailer. Not sure what the use of those words adds to the character or the plot. Is it supposed to make Bateman’s character more endearing? If so, it doesn’t work. Why would an adult address a child this way. It seems the use of the worlds are superfluous to the plot and unnecessary.

RE: Slurs used by Justin Bateman in new movie angers Indian Americans: This is Reeeeediculous. You can’t say anything anymore without offending someone. Not to mention free speech is still protected in this country. If you don’t want to hear the language don’t go see the movie, problem solved. The film looks hilarious. Lighten up, whiney bitches.
RE: Slurs used by Justin Bateman in new film upsets Indian Americans: Free speech time! James. Your view of free speech is so juvenile I can only imagine you have something wrong with your head. I hope that next time your mommy decides to turn the computer on for you it’s for reasons more inventive than expousing bull ideas about Americans’ rights. Here’s how free speech works: one free speecher says what ever the hell they like; if a second free speecher doesn’t like what the first free speecher said, they have the right to say something about that. The two free speechers can talk and debate about the issue, attempting to resolve it. And you know what? Whether they resolve it or not, the GOVERNMENT never gets in the way; never tells anyone what they can and can’t say. You’re the one who needs to stop being a little, whiny . Maybe pull your head out of your a**, hmm? I hope our issue here gets resolved by this amazing freedom we have called “free speech”. Have a nice day.! 😀
